Summary
The Auxiliary Nurse is a member of an interdisciplinary team that provides medical care, recovery therapies and programs, and everyday care and support to clients in Detox and addictions residential treatment. Under the direct supervision of the RN/LPN. The Auxiliary Nurse provides nursing care to clients, and provides support to the nursing team and Physician as directed. The Auxiliary Nurse supports its clients in recovery in a myriad of practical and therapeutic ways including: supporting recovery strategies, assisting with client needs, listening empathetically, and more.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:  include, but are not limited to the following;

  • Assists in establishing and maintaining procedures and policies to ensure proper residential treatment.
  • Follow established procedures and document proper oversight of residential treatment services.
  • Provides on call nursing coverage as necessary
  • Schedules, coordinates and documents physician appointments
  • Facilitates communication with physicians regarding medical services
  • Conducts urinalysis collection with clients as deemed necessary.
  • Monitors and documents progress of clients using the implemented communication tools
  • Prepares and submits reports as deemed necessary.
  • Participates in any quality assurance program and seeks to continuously improve the program within fiscal and departmental parameters
 

Communications/Facilitator

  • Listen and provide honest, compassionate feedback to clients
  • Act as clients advocate & conflict resolution facilitator
  • Promote client independence & self-determination by modeling and demonstrating healthy boundaries
  • Clearly communicating information with all appropriate staff via KIPU
  • Effectively communicate to clients the importance of fully participating to the best of their abilities
 

Documentation & Administration

  • Document all information affecting clients’ treatment using the implemented communication tools
  • Participate and contribute to regular case consultation with the other members of the clinical team
  • Perform some light administrative duties – ie. Assembling files for future clients, posting memos, taking notes at staff meetings, keeping KIPU up to date, etc.
  • Filling out incident reports when necessary

  • Familiar with daily and evening routines
  • Knowledge of website, handbook, and all policies
  • Orientate new clients to all aspects of the program
  • Demonstrate personal competence congruent with responsible care and treatment of persons with addictive disorders
  • Capable of sound organizational, problem-solving, and time management skills
  • Shows responsible and competent leadership skills
  • Work independently, demonstrating initiative, with limited supervision

  • Motivate clients to positive lifestyle change by encouraging and facilitating healthy daily activities 
  • Keep up to date of any appropriate community events that may enhance clients’ stay.

  • Contribute to a safe & healthy working environment by observing universal precautions and infection control procedures; removing obvious hazards; reporting faulty equipment, accidents, injuries, and near misses
  • Adhering to and enforcing rules regarding safety and workplace wellness policies
Knowledge skills and abilities
  • Knowledge of practical nursing 
  • Knowledge of mental health first aid
  • Knowledge of the addiction and specific attention to characteristics and behaviors of both individual and groups
  • Knowledge of computer software programs, as well as utilization of a case management program.
  • Knowledge of modern drug/alcohol services and programs
  • Ability to work with diverse populations of clients
  • Ability to maintain a harmonious working relationship with various agencies, as well as departmental personnel.
  • Ability to work therapeutically with individual clients and their families
  • Make necessary referrals to other agencies and/or providers, as deemed necessary.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times.
  • Ability to maintain integrity in the profession despite legal and/or outside influences
  • Ability to operate a computer with a moderate level of proficiency
  • Ability to work evening shifts, over night shifts, weekends and/or hold weekend groups if deemed necessary
  • Skills in communicating clearly
  • Skills in working in a diverse work setting.
 

Language skills
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedures manuals.  
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.        
  • Ability to speak effectively in front of groups of clients or their family members.
