Overview

The Sustainability & Environment Intern works with the Head of Sustainability & Environment team in Western Canada in delivering S & E programs, which include sustainability and environmental initiatives and compliance reporting, corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities and the sustainability strategy. The position supports market area managers in developing a company culture focused on effective and industry-leading environmental performance.

This is an 8-12-month paid internship role, providing maternity leave coverage to the Lafarge Sustainability and Environment (S&E) team across Western Canada. The S&E team focuses on Lafarge’s sustainability initiatives centered on climate and energy, circular economy, nature and people, as well as Lafarge’s environmental stewardship through its Environmental Management System and in compliance with all environmental regulatory requirements. Primary support is to the Head of Sustainability and Environment and the Sustainability and Environmental Managers as needed.

This role will be based in Calgary, AB or in Vancouver, BC.

Responsibilities

Sustainability and Environmental Initiatives and Reporting



Completion of environmental and sustainability reports, to support both the market areas and Group Sustainable Development requirements.
Coordinate with market area managers and operations personnel to ensure reporting timelines and data integrity Track grants and funding for projects in WCAN
Track grants and funding for project in WCAN
Supports in the development of Sustainability and ESG opportunities
Development of dashboards to support Group Reporting and Country targets / KPIs
Engagement with internal stakeholders to track and report on sustainability initiatives
Support the team on environmental initiatives as required
Monitor and track Group Sustainability targets
Calculate annual WCAN carbon footprint.
Complete assessment and develop plan to update current EMS

CSR and Public Affairs



Public Affairs stories
Media Releases / sustainability stories
Dispatch editorials, and case studies
Support development of Stakeholder Engagement Plans for all product lines
Track community donation requests and communicate with approvers and requestors as needed.
Support communications in the delivery of the Community Investment Program, lead Group reporting of the initiative.
Respond to corporate, regional and operational requests as required
Monitoring of emerging issues or trends in the sector
Support implementation of Office Goes Green program throughout WCAN.

Business Administration



Coordinate with the market area managers on the maintenance of records and activities to ensure compliance with internal Minimum Control Standards
Ensure department records and central files, including the electronic filing system, are accurate, current and maintained (G-drive, network drive)
Coordinate environment related conference calls, face-to-face meetings, workshops as required

Qualifications

Education:



Minimum Undergraduate degree in Science, Applied Science, or a technical diploma in environmental management / science or related field

Knowledge And Skills



Knowledge of federal, provincial, and municipal environmental regulations
Experience working within a team towards a group goal, and coordinating initiatives across internal stakeholders
Strategic thinker with an ability to deliver on tactical initiatives
Computer proficiency in MS Office / G-Suite
Proven research and problem solving skills
Excellent organizational and writing skills
Ability to work with minimal supervision
Flexible and able to balance priorities
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to interact effectively with all levels of an organization
