Whether you’re a seasoned developer, a creative strategist, or just launching your freelance career, you’re part of a growing shift in how work gets done.

At freelance.ca, we asked freelancers across the country to tell us how they find work, what makes them say yes to a project, and how they’re building careers on their own terms. Here’s what the 2025 How Freelancers Work in Canada study revealed and how it can help you level up your own freelance life.

Choose Projects That Challenge You (Not Just Pay You)

Sure, getting paid well matters but that’s not why most freelancers say yes to a project.

According to our study, 71% of freelancers are motivated by the type of work itself. That means challenging tasks, exciting goals, and opportunities to grow your skills are more valuable than just a quick cheque. Only 66% listed revenue as a top factor, and even fewer were swayed by the client’s name or company.

You’re not just taking jobs. You’re building a portfolio, developing expertise, and choosing work that aligns with who you are. Especially if you’re in tech, where 43% of IT freelancers say they care most about the impact of their work.

Want better projects? Start prioritizing the ones that push your limits and say no to the ones that don’t.

Your Network Is Your Secret Weapon

You probably already know this, but the data proves it: the best projects often come from who you know not just where you apply.

67% of freelancers find work through social media

65% rely on personal connections

58% use freelance platforms (like freelance.ca)

If you’re only applying on job boards or sending cold pitches, you’re leaving opportunities on the table. A quick post on LinkedIn, a check-in with a past client, or a DM to someone in your network can open doors that platforms can’t.

And if you’re in IT or digital roles? 70% of tech freelancers use online marketplaces. So whether you’re coding, consulting, or designing, make sure you’re showing up where clients are actually looking.

Flexibility Isn’t a Perk — It’s the Point

We asked freelancers why they left traditional work, and the answers were loud and clear:

61% chose freelancing for a better work-life balance

Another 61% wanted more flexibility

54% were seeking true independence

Only 29% said they were in it for the money.

You’ve built a career that lets you choose your hours, your location, and your clients and that freedom is worth protecting. Whether you’re juggling side projects, parenting, travel, or just need a break from the 9-to-5, remember: freelancing is about designing a life that works for you.

Considering Full-Time Again? Others are just keeping their options open.

But here’s the thing, no matter what path you take, the freelance experience gives you leverage. You know your value. You’ve worked across industries. You’ve built resilience, autonomy, and range. Whether you stay freelance or switch it up, you’re in control now.

You’re Not Just Finding Jobs.
